The latter - directly on /dev/mtdblock0.
NFTL is an entirely different beast, used for emulating a hard drive so you
can use normal filesystems on it. JFFS does all the necessary journalling
and wear levelling itself, and you don't need that.
You'll need to fix the DiskOnChip write and erase routines so they can deal
with writes of other than 512 bytes and erases of other than exactly one
sector. It should be fairly trivial to do so.
